Kidz in a pickle
Story and photos by Russ Grayson, June 2016
It was something different for the Eco Heroes Club at our June meet-up. Nothing in the garden this time, no reptiles, no making scarecrows, no making insect habitats. At this month’s meetup it was food and kitchen skills as the Eco Heroes learned how to pickle their own vegetables.
The pickling skills session was led by Alex and Maddy from Cornersmith, a small pickling and cafe business located in Marrickville in Sydney’s Inner West. Jane Mowbray, a retired teacher, horticulturist and participant in the Inner West Seedsavers provided the necessary back-up.
Assisted by parents, the children learned knife skills, how to slice vegetables, how to pour and how to follow instructions as veges were sliced and placed into glass jars, the vinegar-based preserving liquid poured on and the bottles sealed to take home.
Ecoheroes, a club for five to eleven year olds, has proven a popular initiative and has now been running for several years. The club meets monthly, December excepted, with a different activity each time.
