Barrett House

The establishment of Barrett House as a sustainability demonstration house provides the opportunity to see working examples of practical sustainability measures in action. The retrofit incorporates energy and water efficiency, the use of sustainable building materials, waste avoidance, minimisation and recovery, together with a working Permaculture garden.

Whether you rent or own, live in a studio or a detached house there is something for everyone.

The Retrofit

Sustainability Coach Michael Mobbs together with Community Educator Suzie Brown and Architect Terry Bail developed the designs for the retrofit to turn Barrett House into a model of sustainable living, including:

Solarventi heating and cooling system powered by the sun, double glazing retrofit options from Magnetite, solar power from the Green Solar Group and solar domes from Daylight Designs. Along with 9,000 litres of interconnected rainwater tanks, low impact paints and building materials, sustainable kitchen and a cottage garden designed by Permaculture East.

Michael is aiming to show... "that a house or unit may be made sustainable for energy and water for a capital cost of less than $15,000 and achieve energy and water bills less than $200 for two people, and productive gardens on a household budget of $15,000."

Other sustainability products and examples will be displayed at Barrett House outside of the $15,000 retrofitting budget. This ensures that the house can demonstrate a full range of options and choices available to householders.

Permaculture East are currently working with the retrofit team to establish a working demonstration of Permaculture principles at the house.
