Can I keep my pool clean without using chlorine?

Is chlorinating your pool bad for the environment? Or is it okay?

  • Hi Diana,
    Good question!
I think the chlorine itself is not too nasty, but there's all the embodied energy, packaging etc that goes into its manufacture and distribution.

Can you keep your pool clean without it?? Not according to the NSW department of health. The chlorine in most pools is there to kill diseases and harmful substances pretty much instantly. So if you're swimming with kids or someone who has the flu, you can be fairly sure that whatever ends up in the water with you (ie body fluids) will not harm you. Chlorine disinfects the water.

There are 'natural' swimming pools that use biological processes (reed beds) to clean the water, and these are beautiful and do work. But diseases and pathogens can be spread from one person to another because they only get removed from the system once the water enters the separate filtration system.

search 'natural swimming pools' for heaps of info.

  • You could ask the guys at Boy Charlton, they seem to use mostly salt water and a small amount of chlorine only. Not sure if that's made easier because they are sitting right on top of the harbour and are sucking up and filtering huge volumes of water .. but its definitely lovely to swim in! www.boycharlton.com.au for more i imagine

  • There is products on the market that do not use 'chlorine' as there main cleanser, you will have to search hard for them, maybe overseas.
