Foxes in Bondi

Has anyone noticed foxes in Bondi? Bondi Public School's beautiful chickens got taken last week. How can we keep them away?

  • Hi Emma,
Whilst there are chickens at the school there will always be a fox close by. The best way to keep them out is to build a fox proof enclosure for the chickens. However the fox will still be around to cause the chickens stress and discomfort.

With regard to controlling foxes in a densely urbanised environment, this is extremely difficult. Many of the fox control techniques available are not feasable in areas like Bondi due to off-target impact on domestic animals, native fauna and a risk to human safety.

There are passive forms of control that we can all use to minimise foxes lurking in your neighbourhood. These include; keeping lids on bins (especially compost), dont leave pet food outside overnight, blocking up holes in drains and underneath houses and removing dense weed infestations that act as a pleasant home for the fox. Just remember foxes will eat almost anything!

I think National Parks have used dogs to deter foxes preying on Penguin colonies?
