Speaking of Recycling Week

News around recycling still sends shivers down the spine of every good environmentalist! But there’s no room for despair when it comes to saving Planet Earth and future generations. These days electronic waste, plastic bags and clothing and textiles are just some of the unwanted items that can be recycled and recovered from community recycling centres. Local Councils and industry organise separate chemical clean-out days and in some areas Councils are gearing up local food waste collection and processing services.

But as individuals you don’t always have to rely on others to do your bit. Food waste and food organics make up around 40 to 50 percent of household red-lid rubbish bins. One in five shopping bags of food is destined for landfill. So make a list before you shop, eat what you buy, choose the items with the least packaging and keep those reusable shopping bags, drinking bottles and cups handy for when you have a hankering for a takeaway coffee, drinking water on a hot day and a quick visit to your local supermarket.
