How do i deter rats from eating the Roma Tomatoes on my front verge garden in Bondi?
Those dirty rats have eaten most of the tomatoes well before they ripen. Im down to my last few and want to stop them taking all of this season's bounty. These are big street rats and hipsters too i fear (I think i spotted tiny fixie skid marks in the soil).

For rats:
-traps
-baits
-put tomato plant in hanging baskets so tomatoes aren't easy to access for rats
-cayenne pepper/chilli flakes around base of plants may workFor hipsters:
- place untrendy clothing around base of plant
- put a sign up saying they are not organic and that you spray them with pesticides -
Thanks for these great ideas guys! love the hipster recommends too thanks Richie! i like the hanging planter idea in particular though tomatoes seem to like ore soil than a planter can provide i think. Next season i'll implement some of these ideas and report back!

Have you tried using some recycled timber and chicken wire and creating a fence surrounding and enclsoing the area? You would need to ensure that the chicken wire goes into the ground about 100mm too (and that you have a way to access your crop). The other option would be to look at your next crop hanging from a planter! Why not DIY! http://justlive.us/physical/make-your-own-upside-down-tomato-planter/
