Whats best PVC window frames or aluminium?
I'm planning on updating my window frames and need some info on the best option from an environmental perspective for PVC or aluminium. I live close to the ocean so wood isn't an option. Thanks

Aluminum thermally not as efficient as timber or PVC as they will transmit heat and cold air in and out of the building . You can look at window systems that have a thermal break and also can use timber internally if that is the look you are after look at stegbar / airlite systems for more info .
PVC systems have had some bad press due to the manufacturing with chloride so look to companies that can give you feedback on their process and Enviro credentials . Make sure that you look at their warranties and UV protection abilities as older systems did deteriate but they have advance in plastic technology in past few years .
Make sure if you go for Aluminum the paint specification is higher for coastal areas . -
Aluminium only frames are not worth the money. They loose more heat than even double glazing will save.
Also be aware of air gaps between the window frame and the walls. These gaps account for twice as much heat loss than the window itself.Have a look at that link "http://www.consumer.org.nz/news/view/insulated-frames-for-double-glazing/page/2" .
3rd comment about German window style in particular - aluminium to stand the salt and thermal break to keep the warmth inside.
This technology works down to -30 degrees (northern Europe) so will keep your house nice and warm.Probably a bit more expensive. However, considering that 40% of heat loss is due to windows (glass, frame and gaps) it will pay back quickly through reduced power- / gas-bills.
You might like to ask a sustainable architect where to get them and what else to look at when replacing doors and windows (see link "http://www.ecodirectory.com.au/index.php/sustainable-builders-architects/" .

We have gone with Aluminum windows from Stegbar, they supply quite a few windows/doors for the East both residential and commercial. We are in North Bondi so salt spray can be an issue and they seemed to be the best option.

There are advantages in one type of window with the other. I've been in this dilemma, a lot of things I found on here http://pvcstolarija.blogspot.com/2014/09/pvc-i-alu-stolarija-sta-ih-cini-slicnim.html

Material which PVC profiles are produced from has a lower coefficient of thermal conductivity in comparison with aluminum profiles and thats why PVC windows retain more heat in the room compared to aluminum frames. For the same reason with PVC windows it is easier to avoid frost.

Upvc joinery is the best solution for various weather conditions. try those German products:

If you’re looking for energy-efficiency and low maintenance, then vinyl windows are probably your best bet. Most of the contractors I’ve worked with in the past are offering aluminum windows only if homeowners specifically ask for them, since the vinyl options are less expensive and more effective overall. I’ve performed a few installations of <a href="http://www.tomadamswc.com/windows-and-doors/windows/">vinyl windows replacement Bucks</a> County homes and they are far more durable than either wood or aluminum options.
